WISE ATTENTION: COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR OURSELVES AND OTHERS

The greatest gift we can offer an ill or dying patient is our attention. Full attention engages mind, heart and body and is mutually beneficial for caregiver and patient. This attention nurtures, heals and transforms.

Mindfulness and compassion are two aspect of wise attention. The balance of these two qualities allows us to profoundly care, and yet not get overwhelmed.

To face our own or others' suffering, we need to draw on inner resources. Mindfulness helps us see our own difficult mind states such as anger or fear or a sense of helplessness with compassion instead of self-judgment. It provides a refuge during the storms of illness by helping us connect compassionately with others, no matter the circumstances providing the inner resiliency to sustain our work over the long term.

We will use mindfulness and inquiry practice to investigate our relationship to death and the qualities that best serve at the time of dying. These qualities include compassionate presence in the face of suffering, freedom from the limitations of roles and an abiding trust in the dying process.
