New Program Encourages Creative Solutions in End-of-Life Care

"My expectations were exceeded. This was the most meaningful, applicable formal training I've received since I learned to read and write."
-Patricia Wudel, Executive Director Joseph's House, Washington, DC

Metta Institute is seeking candidates for its innovative End-of-Life Care Practitioner Program Program. The year-long program is designed to create a national network of counselors that helps reaffirm and reclaim the spiritual dimensions of dying. The experiential training prepares practitioners to serve as educators, advocates, and guides to the dying and to the systems that serve them. Candidates include those with substantial experience in end-of-life care, a committed spiritual practice, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a hunger for new approaches.

The program offers the opportunity to study with a world-class faculty including:

  • Angeles Arrien, PhD, author, anthropologist, Associate Professor, California Institute for Integral Studies.
  • Ram Dass, author, internationally renowned spiritual teacher.
  • Zoketsu Norman Fischer, author, Zen priest, former Abbot of San Francisco Zen Center, founder of Everyday Zen Foundation.
  • Charles Garfield, PhD, author, founder of Shanti Project, Clinical Professor, University of California at San Francisco Medical School.
  • Rabbi Alan Lew, Spiritual Leader, Congregation Beth Shalom, founder of Makor Or Center for Jewish Meditation.
  • Frank Ostaseski, founder, Zen Hospice Project, director, Metta Institute.
  • Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, author, co-founder of Commonweal Center, Clinical Professor, University of California at San Francisco Medical School.
  • Ange Stephens, MA, MFT, psychotherapist, co-leader of Metta Institute End-of-Life Care Practitioner Program.
  • Frances Vaughan, PhD, author, transpersonal psychologist, trustee of the Fetzer Institute.

The training offers unparalleled personal and professional development and requires participation in seven extended weekends, two 10-day residential retreats, and monthly mentoring by core faculty. All sessions are held in the San Francisco Bay Area. Commuting is possible. The next program begins in January 2007. Tuition is $5000 (plus room & board charges for residential sessions). Partial scholarships are available.
