About Metta Institute
Metta Institute® was established to provide public education and professional trainings on mindful and compassionate care of the dying and to share the lessons learned from being with dying to help us all live a more meaningful life. Inspired by the Buddhist tradition we encourage the integration of the spiritual dimensions of living, dying and transformation, through training, educational programs and materials.
Metta Institute was formed in 2004 as an outgrowth of the Zen Hospice Project (ZHP). Our Director, Frank Ostaseski helped form ZHP in 1987, and guided the program for 17 years.
METTA is a Buddhist term meaning loving-kindness, friendliness, and benevolence. We chose the name because it expresses the essential human quality that is most beneficial in the lives of those who are dying and their caregivers.
Our Resources section offers an audio series, recommended reading and media, Buddhist practice, grief and loss support and End-of-Life related issues.
Metta Institute is a federally approved 501c3 charitable non-profit corporation guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, whose member include Frank Ostaseski, President & Director, Sigward Moser, Treasurer, Gabe Luna Ostaseski, Secretary

Due to the pandemic Metta Institute is on a hiatus at least through the end of 2024. We will continue to provide education on mindful and compassionate approaches to care inspired by the Buddhist tradition. However, we want to place an equal emphasis on how we can use the wisdom gained by maintaining an awareness of death to help us live happier, productive and more loving lives.
We are no longer offering the End of Life Practitioner Program. We occasionally partner with other organization to offer periodic programs. Join our mailing list to be informed of our current offerings. We recommend you explore the programs related to grief, death, and living fully offered by our Director, Frank Ostaseski. More information can be found at FrankOstaseski.com.
